Top Destination: Maldives

Go big or go home, they say. You can go home where you have always been, or you can make the Maldives your next idyllic destination! Everyone knows of the Maldives Island, or at least has heard of it, but let’s see just what exactly this beautiful island has to offer.

This independent island country is ideally a series of coral atolls, consisting of about 1,200 low-lying islands, 200 of which are inhabited. A majority of the other islands are used for economic purposes, tourism and agriculture being the most dominant. A good number of them are resort Islands. This typically means more than enough room for a vacation, yes? And the best news? Each resort sits on its own island, meaning more privacy and luxury for the hotel visitors.

Things you need to know about the Maldives

  • The Maldives being an island country, the only way to get by is through waterways, via speedboats, seaplanes, local ferries, yachts, etc.
  • Every resort on the Maldives is on its own island, which means that every facility you get access to on the resort is exclusive to that resort only. With more than 100 resort islands to choose from, this grants you a variety to choose from, enjoying your exclusive holiday with the much needed privacy. Many resorts however offer excursions by boat to the capital Island of Male and to local fishing villages.
  • The Maldives has Islam as its state religion, and therefore its citizens actively practice Islam. This means that there are certain types of clothing that are unacceptable in certain areas in the island country. Particularly, when visiting the capital of Male, modest dressing is necessary that covers the shoulders to knees. A visit to the local islands requires modest clothing as well, which basically is anything that covers the shoulders and is to the knees. Most resorts however do not have restrictions, but it is necessary for one to find out all the information necessary beforehand to avoid any inconveniences. A cover-up such as a sarong will go a long way in your trip to this beautiful island country.
