Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti has long been famed as one of the most beautiful wildlife rich areas of Africa in which to go on safari, and it certainly lives up to its reputation, never failing to capture one’s heart as you are confronted by all the romanticism and drama that Africa has to offer. Located in the North West region of Tanzania, with an invisible border with Kenya’s Masai Mara. The Serengeti ecosystem spans 30,000 sq km and is host to the annual wildebeest migration, which remains in Tanzania for approximately 8-9 months of the year.

A million wildebeest... each one driven by the same ancient rhythm, fulfilling its instinctive role in the inescapable cycle of life: a frenzied three-week bout of territorial conquests and mating; survival of the fittest as 40km (25 mile) long columns plunge through crocodile-infested waters on the annual exodus north; replenishing the species in a brief population explosion that produces more than 8,000 calves daily before the 1,000 km (600 mile) pilgrimage begins again.

It should be remembered that not all the animals in the Serengeti opt to join the wildebeest in their time-honoured circuit to find the best grazing. Zebras certainly tag along and a good number of predators who are looking for the weak and unwary. But many species are quite happy with their own territory, which makes a day’s game driving in the Serengeti an absolute delight and an experience to be treasured and remembered.
