The Great Rift Valley Lakes

The Kenyan Rift Valley is a section of the 6,000km Great Rift Valley which stretches from the Dead Sea in the Middle East all the way to Mozambique. It is one of Africa’s defining geographical features.

There are eight Rift Valley Lakes in Kenya but the main attraction are the southern lakes of Baringo, Nakuru and Naivasha. These lakes reveal not only a vast wealth of bird-life (over 400 species on Baringo alone) but also hippo, crocodile and near Lake Nakuru, the rhino sanctuary.

The rugged countryside surrounding the lakes is equally spectacular. Hill walking up peaks such as Longonot will afford the energetic traveller marvellous views over the lakes.

In and around the Rift Valley Lakes
Game drives and walking safaris are possible, along with boat trips, fishing and a variety of water activities. Some of the lakes are surrounded by excellent hiking routes.
